{"id":1931,"date":"2011-06-30T22:06:38","date_gmt":"2011-06-30T16:06:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/?p=1931"},"modified":"2011-06-30T22:06:38","modified_gmt":"2011-06-30T16:06:38","slug":"adigene-valley-loop-hike-and-extension","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/2011\/06\/30\/adigene-valley-loop-hike-and-extension\/","title":{"rendered":"Adigene Valley Loop Hike (and extension)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_1932\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/MG_8531.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1932\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1932\" title=\"_MG_8531\" src=\"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/MG_8531-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/MG_8531-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/MG_8531.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1932\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Trailhead Sign<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Adigene Valley Loop Trail is one of the closest hikes to Bishkek, and yet is an opportunity to get away from it all.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure it gets traffic on a summer Sunday afternoon, yet the three times I have been up there I haven\u2019t seen a soul.\u00a0 It runs through woods and meadows, and past the climber\u2019s cemetery.\u00a0 The loop trail climbs some 2,000 feet to 8,500 feet of elevation at its top, and connects to an unmarked trail which continues up the valley from there.\u00a0 The loop itself is a 4.1 mile hike, but with the extension I suppose you can make it as long as you like.\u00a0 I&#8217;m told that for the really adventurous, you can cross over into the Sokoluk Valley.<\/p>\n<p>I have provided a <a href=\"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Adygene-Valley-Hike-Final.gdb\">GPS file<\/a> you can <a title=\"Using a GPS in Kyrgyzstan (or anywhere)\" href=\"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/2011\/06\/12\/using-a-gps-in-kyrgyzstan-or-anywhere\/\">use with your GPS<\/a> or <a title=\"Using Google Earth and \u201c.gdb\u201d Files\" href=\"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/2011\/06\/12\/using-google-earth-and-gdb-files\/\">open in Google Earth<\/a> to get a better look at the route.\u00a0 I\u2019ve also input the whole route into OpenStreetMap, so if you use the OSM implementation on your GPS, you can just use the \u201cfollow road\u201d option to create your own route.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1935\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Map-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1935\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1935\" title=\"Map 1\" src=\"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Map-1-300x181.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Map-1-300x181.jpg 300w, http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Map-1-1024x620.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Map-1.jpg 1664w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1935\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"> Road to Trailhead - click to enlarge<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Getting There<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The road to the trailhead is simple, and likely you\u2019ve already driven it.\u00a0 Just up Ala Archa canyon to the parking lot, on the right side of the road, marked Adigene Valley.\u00a0 The map above shows the driving route from the corner of Panfilova and Gorkova, but you probably already know that you just need to drive up Mir to the traffic light, take a right.\u00a0 Take the next major left, and continue on straight all the way.\u00a0 You pay the park entrance fee at the Ala Archa Gate, of course.\u00a0 From there, it is another 6.2 miles, for a total of about 20 miles from the U.S. Embassy.\u00a0 The drive should take you only about 40 minutes.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1937\" style=\"width: 437px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/149990_1705764765216_1270942356_1875607_3915053_n.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1937\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1937\" title=\"149990_1705764765216_1270942356_1875607_3915053_n\" src=\"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/149990_1705764765216_1270942356_1875607_3915053_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"427\" srcset=\"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/149990_1705764765216_1270942356_1875607_3915053_n.jpg 600w, http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/149990_1705764765216_1270942356_1875607_3915053_n-300x158.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1937\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Typical Scenery<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Loop Trail Hike<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>From the parking lot you cross the bridge and pass through a relatively flat informal \u201cpicnic area.\u201d\u00a0 Unfortunately, the picnic area is pretty overused and trash-strewn.\u00a0 There are paths leading every which way, but you just keep going upriver and to the right and you will soon find yourself on the single trail heading up towards the beginning of the loop.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1943\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/MG_8472.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1943\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1943\" title=\"_MG_8472\" src=\"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/MG_8472-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/MG_8472-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/MG_8472.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1943\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Climber&#39;s Cemetery<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Your first real choice is when you come to the beginning of the loop, at almost half-a-mile from the trailhead.\u00a0 If you take the left fork, to the climber\u2019s cemetery, you will make almost half of the remaining uphill portion of the hike (and about a quarter of the total altitude gain of the hike) under the cover of<br \/>\ntrees.\u00a0 If it is a warm, sunny day, that is probably a good idea, since taking the right fork means you will make the full climb completely exposed to the sun.<\/p>\n<p><strong><div id=\"attachment_1945\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Map-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1945\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1945\" title=\"Map 2\" src=\"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Map-2-300x186.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"186\" srcset=\"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Map-2-300x186.jpg 300w, http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Map-2-1024x636.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Map-2.jpg 1664w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1945\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Trail Map -
