{"id":2882,"date":"2012-10-22T11:30:08","date_gmt":"2012-10-22T05:30:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/?p=2882"},"modified":"2012-11-18T19:13:12","modified_gmt":"2012-11-18T13:13:12","slug":"sajama-hike-climb-sajama-national-park-pt-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/2012\/10\/22\/sajama-hike-climb-sajama-national-park-pt-5\/","title":{"rendered":"Sajama Hike (Climb), Sajama National Park, pt. 5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/MG_0216.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3046\" title=\"_MG_0216\" src=\"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/MG_0216.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"427\" height=\"641\" srcset=\"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/MG_0216.jpg 427w, http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/MG_0216-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 427px) 100vw, 427px\" \/><\/a>Que\u00f1ua Tree<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m sure it is very satisfying to reach the peak of a mountain after a long and arduous climb.\u00a0 To me, though, it seems like the few minutes of satisfaction would be poor compensation for the long, arduous, climb.\u00a0 For that reason, my \u201cpeaking\u201d has been limited to some pretty easy and low peaks, like <a href=\"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/2012\/03\/19\/up-frary-peak-on-antelope-island-utah\/\">Frary Peak on Antelope Island in the Great Salt Lake of Utah<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/MG_01271.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3045\" title=\"_MG_0127\" src=\"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/MG_01271-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/MG_01271-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/MG_01271.jpg 427w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>So, I\u2019m not interested in climbing Tata Sajama.\u00a0 I\u2019m satisfied to view it from afar, and maybe from a bit nearer.\u00a0 For the nearer view, hiking up the path used by climbers for the initial ascent of the Sajama is probably as good an alternative as any.\u00a0 It is a beautiful hike up through the highest forest in the world, consisting exclusively of que\u00f1ua (<em>Polylepis tarapacana<\/em>) trees which can survive up to about 17,000 feet of altitude.\u00a0 This forest harbors unique flora and fauna, and particularly a number of birds endemic to such high altitude forests.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3059\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/MG_9049.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3059\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3059\" title=\"_MG_9049\" src=\"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/MG_9049-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/MG_9049-300x201.jpg 300w, http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/MG_9049.jpg 427w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3059\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Black Siskin<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t get very far up the mountain (yet another reason to go back to the Park), but I enjoyed the walk immensely.\u00a0 The views of the mountain are incredible;
