{"id":4240,"date":"2013-07-20T19:06:48","date_gmt":"2013-07-20T23:06:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/?p=4240"},"modified":"2013-07-21T13:00:29","modified_gmt":"2013-07-21T17:00:29","slug":"uyuni-to-villa-mar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/2013\/07\/20\/uyuni-to-villa-mar\/","title":{"rendered":"Uyuni to Villa Mar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This drive takes you south from Uyuni towards the colored lakes of Los Lipez.\u00a0 Start out along Highway 5 from Uyuni.\u00a0 Villa Mar is the location of the very pleasant Jardines de Mallku Cueva hotel, a great jumping off point for further explorations.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>At x miles is the unmarked turnoff to the right to the Train Cemetery.\u00a0 Beyond the cemetery you follow the south shore of the Salar for some x miles before turning south.\u00a0 The south shore is mostly a huge mudflat, likely flooded in rainey season and prone to duststorms in dry times. <\/p>\n<p>After turning south, keep your eyes out for vicu\u00f1as.\u00a0 At x miles is the left turn to San Crist\u00f3bal. <\/p>\n<p>San Crist\u00f3bal is the company town of the mine of the same name.\u00a0 The San Crist\u00f3bal mine is a huge open pit zinc\/lead\/silver mine owned by Sumitomo.\u00a0 The town is interesting mostly for its large and beautiful stone church, which reportedly sports a silver alter. <\/p>\n<p>The drive south from San Crist\u00f3bal is not very exciting for the first x miles.\u00a0 The landscape continues flat with a light scrub desert.\u00a0 However, that changes at about mile x from San Crist\u00f3bal.\u00a0 From that point on you will see interesting rock formations on the left side of road. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/wpid-DSC_0078.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"DSC_0078.JPG\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/wpid-DSC_0078.jpg\" \/><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>The formations, weathered out of sandstone are fun to explore and certainly worth hiking through, if you have time.\u00a0 They continue all the way to Villa Mar and even form one side of the Jardines de Mallku Cueva hotel, so if that is your destination, you will probably have time to explore them.\u00a0 On our short walk we found slot canyons winding through the rock, as well as numerous hoodoos and one small natural arch.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This drive takes you south from Uyuni towards the colored lakes of Los Lipez.\u00a0 Start out along Highway 5 from Uyuni.\u00a0 Villa Mar is the location of the very pleasant Jardines de Mallku Cueva hotel, a great jumping off point for further explorations.\u00a0 At x miles is the unmarked turnoff to the right to the [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[101,92,102,60,58,57,91,59,9],"tags":[187,191,131,170,132],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4240"}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=4240"}],"version-history":[{"count":6,"href":"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4240\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":4250,"href":"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4240\/revisions\/4250"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=4240"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=4240"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/memmott.us\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=4240"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
